Sustainibility rankings
Sustainability at leading universities according to the UI GreenMetric ranking
At these universities, sustainability is an integral part of the overall strategy – it is embedded in education, research, and the daily operation of the campus. It’s not treated as a separate set of documents but as a natural part of how the university functions.
A strong emphasis is placed on:
Social responsibility and a forward-looking orientation
Community engagement – students, staff, and leadership view sustainability as a shared value
SDGs – university activities are aligned with the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda
Green office – dedicated units with a clear sustainability agenda
Presentation – high-quality, well-organized, visually appealing, and regularly updated websites, often featuring statements from university leadership
Below you will find examples of universities that ranked at the top according to the UI GreenMetric.
Wageningen University & Research
It has held the top position in this ranking for several consecutive years. It is the only university in the Netherlands that focuses on the topic of “healthy food and living environment.” The university collaborates with both governments and businesses. It is also a member of the Nature-Positive Universities Alliance – a global network of 500 higher education institutions committed to improving, among other things, nature-friendly conditions on their campuses.
Nottingham Trent University
It sees itself as a university where students, academics, and partners work together to find sustainable solutions to global challenges, thereby maintaining its position as a leading institution in the field of sustainability. The topic of sustainability is clearly defined in the strategic plan.
